In construction, it is used to provide a degree of thermal insulation and weather resistance, and to improve the appearance of buildings.  Cladding can be made of any of a wide range of materials including wood, metal, brick, vinyl, and composite materials that can include aluminum, wood, blends of cement and recycled polystyrene, and wheat/rice straw fibers. – As per Wikipedia;

The term “cladding” thus refers to components that are attached to the primary structure of a building to form a non-structural, external surface. So, in other words; for added effect to the outside of your building.

Different Cladding Timber:

It does not matter where you live in South Africa, you are bound to have passed at least a few houses sporting timber cladding. Regardless of how popular this type of cladding is, no other option of cladding provides the same look and style as wood.

But there is a multitude of different timber used for cladding, all providing their own unique look and style. Different species of timber look and behave differently. Depending on your project, this will mean certain timbers are more suited than others.

This is a very important part of the process, to ensure the appearance, durability, color, grain, and longevity are within your project needs.

You have a choice between softwood (This is the most common choice) and hardwood (This is less frequently used than softwood and it is generally limited to use in more prestigious buildings.)

Classifying wood as either hardwood or softwood comes down to its physical structure and makeup, and so it is overly simplistic to think of hardwoods as being hard and durable compared to soft and workable softwoods.


Hardwood comes from angiosperm trees that are not monocots; trees are usually broad-leaved. Has vessel elements that transport water throughout the wood; under a microscope, these elements appear as pores. Most hardwoods have a higher density than most softwoods.

Examples of hardwood trees include alder, balsa, beech, hickory, mahogany, maple, oak, teak, and walnut.

Hardwood Uses and Pricing:

Hardwoods are more likely to be found in high-quality furniture, decks, flooring, and construction that needs to last.

Hardwood is typically more expensive than softwood due to the fact that hardwood has a slower growth rate.

Installing hardwood cladding:

Normally fixed by screwing to treated softwood fixing battens. Even for boards erected close to their in-use moisture content, it is advisable to over-drill the holes in the boards to provide a clearance around the shank of the screw to allow for seasonal variation in moisture content.


Comes from gymnosperm trees which usually have needles and cones. Medullary rays and tracheids transport water and produce sap. When viewed under a microscope, softwoods have no visible pores because of tracheids. Most softwoods have a lower density than most hardwoods.

Softwood uses and pricing:

About 80% of all timber comes from softwood. Softwoods have a wide range of applications and are found in building components (e.g., windows, doors), furniture, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), paper, Christmas trees, and much more. Examples of softwood trees are cedar, Douglas fir, juniper, pine, redwood, spruce, and yew.

Softwood is typically less expensive compared to hardwood due to the fact that it has a faster-growing rate than most hardwoods.

Installing softwood cladding:

Normally nailed in position. Standard wire nails can be used but annular ring-shank nails are preferred for their improved holding power

When building with cladding in mind, you need to be aware of a few initial needs, to support your cladding exterior/interior.

Remember: If cladding needs to be painted onsite, it is recommended to do so before installation.

The basics

In principle, any timber cladding should be designed as a rain screen. Assuming that the cladding will always be subject to some penetration of moisture a separate protective membrane will be necessary behind the cladding largely protected from wind, rain, and daylight by the cladding itself.

Whatever system is used, a cavity should always be provided behind the Cladding to allow for the drainage of any moisture that penetrates the cladding. Additionally, it will also provide sufficient ventilation to dissipate any internally generated vapor.


There are a few regulations when it comes to installing your cladding correctly. This includes the support for your cladding.

  1. The cavity behind cladding: No less than 19mm wide (width is usually determined by the size of battens necessary to fix the boards.)
  2. Battens: At least 2.5 times the thinness for the boards to be fixed (this is for standard nails used but with improved nails (eg annular ring shank) or screws, a batten twice the thickness as the board is adequate.)
  3. Horizontal Boards: Only require to be fixed to vertical battens and these will not restrict either drainage or vertical circulation of air in the cavity.
  4. Vertical Boards: Fixed to horizontal battens and if the boards are tight-jointed it will be necessary to introduce vertical counter battens behind these horizontal battens which would otherwise prevent drainage and vertical circulation of air.

Remember that the overall visual quality of timber cladding will be very dependent on the details relating to building configuration. Including corners, changes of level, parapets, openings, junctions with other materials, etc. Therefore, these conditions need careful consideration. Particularly in relating the natural dimensions of the cladding systems to other elements of the building.
