CCA wood treatment, also known as Chromate Copper Arsenate treatment, is a method of preserving wood. The purpose of this treatment is to increase the durability and lifespan of the wood.

CCA wood treatment is mainly used to safeguard wood against decay, insects, and fungi. As a result, it is suitable for outdoor applications and areas exposed to high levels of moisture.

Chromium

The fungicidal properties of chromium are derived from its ability to disrupt the metabolic processes and cellular functions of fungi.

When exposed to chromium compounds, these organisms experience inhibitory effects that hinder their growth, reproduction, and colonization on treated surfaces.

This interference hampers vital functions of fungi, such as nutrient absorption and enzyme production, which are crucial for their survival and propagation. As a result, the growth of fungi that cause decay is significantly suppressed, reducing the risk of material degradation and decay.

Chromium’s fungicidal action is particularly valuable in environments where moisture or high humidity levels promote fungal growth. These conditions often lead to the development of fungal colonies. These colonies cause structural damage and compromise the visual appeal of various materials.

Copper

Copper exhibits insecticidal properties, making it effective in repelling and eliminating various insects, including termites and beetles.

Copper’s insect-repelling characteristics stem from its ability to disrupt the nervous system of insects. Copper ions, released when copper comes into contact with moisture or acidic environments, interfere with the insects’ neural pathways. As a result, their motor functions and sensory perception gets affected. This disruption hinders their ability to navigate, feed, and communicate effectively, deterring them from inhabiting areas treated with copper.

Arsenic

Arsenic plays a significant role in enhancing the overall effectiveness of preservative mixtures by augmenting resistance to both decay and insect damage. When incorporated into preservatives, arsenic compounds contribute unique properties that significantly extend the lifespan and durability of treated materials.

One of the primary benefits of arsenic in preservatives is its ability to inhibit decay-causing organisms, such as fungi and bacteria. These microorganisms thrive in moist and humid environments, breaking down organic materials and leading to their deterioration.

CCA Treatment

The CCA treatment process involves placing the wood in a pressure chamber and applying high pressure to force the preservative solution deep into the wood fibers. This pressure impregnation ensures that the preservatives penetrate the core of the wood, providing long-lasting protection.
