Using a quality sealer for your deck is essential to ensure enhanced durability. It’s commonly said that a deck can last 20 – 30 years, however, in reality, a timber deck that is well cared for can last a lifetime. Since a deck is built outdoors, it is heavily exposed to sunlight, rain, and other weather elements, which could have a great impact on the wood itself. Furthermore, a timber deck should be able to handle heavy traffic, heavy traffic also contributes to wear and tear, therefore adding extra protection can be very useful.
There are various ways to maintain your deck, however, today’s blog is about applying a quality sealer for extra protection
We supply a list of quality sealers, however today, we will discuss our “Timberlife Ultradeck” sealer, first, let’s start with how to properly prepare your timber deck before application.
Preparing Your Timber Deck before applying any quality sealer
A beautiful timber finish starts with proper preparation. Applying a sealer directly to timber without proper preparation can lead to poor adhesion, uneven coloring, and a less durable finish. By taking the time to prepare your timber properly, you’ll ensure a flawless and long-lasting result.
Assess the timber
Before diving into the cleaning and preparation process, take a close look at your deck to determine the best course of action. Here’s what you need to consider:
Is your deck new or old?
New timber: Generally requires minimal prep work. You might need to remove any surface dirt or debris with a broom or compressed air. Light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper (around 180-220 grit) can help ensure the sealant adheres properly.
Weathered timber: Requires more extensive preparation due to potential accumulated dirt, weathering, and wear. You’ll likely need a thorough cleaning and additional sanding to remove any surface mold, mildew, or graying caused by sun exposure. Deeper scratches or imperfections may require further attention with wood filler before sanding.
Was your deck previously treated?
Untreated timber: Proceed with cleaning and sanding as described above.
Previously treated timber: Existing paint, stain, or sealant needs removal before applying a new layer. Choose the removal method based on the type of finish:
Water-based finishes: Often removable with a strong deck cleaner or specialized stripper.
Oil-based finishes: Typically require sanding or using a chemical stripper designed for oil-based products.
If unsure about the type of previous treatment, consult a professional for guidance on safe and effective removal methods. When removing old finishes, wear appropriate safety gear like gloves, eye protection, and a respirator.
Address any imperfections (optional)
Address any structural issues or imperfections on your deck to a secure and aesthetically pleasing finished product. Here’s what you need to consider:
1. Warping:
Mild warping (less than 6mm / 1/4 inch): You might be able to leave it alone if it doesn’t cause uneven walking surfaces or interfere with door clearance. However, if it bothers you aesthetically, consider sanding down the high points or using deck shims to create a more level surface.
Significant warping (more than 6mm / 1/4 inch): This could indicate underlying structural problems requiring professional attention.
2. Cracks:
Small cracks (less than 3mm / 1/8 inch): These can often be filled with a high-quality exterior wood filler specifically designed for decks. Make sure the filler is compatible with the type of wood and the chosen sealant.
Larger cracks (greater than 3mm / 1/8 inch): These can compromise the deck’s structural integrity and may require further attention. Depending on the severity, you might need to replace the affected board or use specialized epoxy repair kits designed for structural deck repairs.
3. Loose boards:
Identify the cause: Loose boards can be caused by various factors like nail or screw failure, moisture damage, or improper installation. Address the underlying cause before securing the board.
Secure loose boards: Re-nail or screw down the affected board using galvanized or stainless-steel fasteners appropriate for the deck material. You can also use specialized deck screws designed for securing loose boards.
4. Other imperfections:
Rotting wood: Remove and replace any rotten wood sections. Use pressure-treated lumber for replacements to ensure longevity and resistance to moisture damage.
Missing nails or screws: Replace missing fasteners with appropriate galvanized or stainless-steel options.
Rusting nails or screws: Remove and replace rusted fasteners, ensuring the replacements are corrosion-resistant. You might be able to leave it alone if it doesn’t cause uneven walking surfaces or interfere with door clearance. However, if it bothers you aesthetically, consider sanding down the high points or using deck shims to create a more level surface.
Significant warping (more than 6mm / 1/4 inch): This could indicate underlying structural problems requiring professional attention.
What is Timberlife Ultra Deck
A sealer acts as a shield, repelling water, blocking harmful UV rays, and preventing the growth of mold and mildew. It also enhances the natural beauty of the wood and keeps your deck looking vibrant.
Timberlife Ultradeck sealer can be used in a diverse range of applications, however, it is ideal for a timber deck. It is a solvent-based sealer that delivers deep-rooted protection and a beautiful semi-gloss finish to your timber. Its special blend of high-quality resins, natural oils, and water-repelling waxes penetrates the wood, creating a tough barrier against wear and tear. It also includes UV-resistant pigments to prevent fading and protect your wood from sun damage.
Timberlife Ultradeck is 100% compatible with CCA-treated decking, it can also be used on hardwoods, however, hardwoods contain their natural oils which make the wood resistant to natural elements.
For the sealant to work effectively on hardwoods, it should be washed down with thinners first and then wiped clean with a dry cloth.
