When it comes to coastal wood construction, it’s important to choose the right type of wood to use. The saltwater, humidity, and constant exposure to the elements can cause significant damage to wood, leading to decay, warping, and other problems.
To ensure that your timber structure can withstand the harsh coastal environment, it’s essential to choose wood species that are naturally resistant to decay and have high durability. Examples of such wood species include teak, cedar, and cypress or, you can go for CCA-treated SA pine or Eucalyptus, which is the more cost-effective option.
Using CCA-treated pine and Eucalyptus for coastal wood construction.
Pine is a softwood; this may have you rethinking the idea of using it at the coast. It just doesn’t make sense, right? On the contrary, it is just the perfect coastal wood construction once it is CCA-treated.
Eucalyptus, on the other hand, is a hardwood. Generally, hardwoods cannot be CCA-treated. This is because their dense structure makes it difficult for the solution to penetrate deep into the wood. However, Eucalyptus, particularly, has some sapwood around its hardwood. This makes it possible for the CCA chemicals to penetrate the wood, providing additional protection to the wood.
At Sabie poles, we add a certain wax chemical to our CCA mixture which provides extra protection against moisture while being protected against insects such as marine borers. This makes the wood ideal to use on the coast.
Benefits of Eucalyptus and Pine.
There are several benefits to using both Eucalyptus poles and pine timber for coastal wood construction:
- Strength and Durability: Both Eucalyptus poles and pine timber are known for their high strength and durability, making them excellent choices for use in construction. They have a high resistance to moisture, rot, and pests, making them suitable for use in harsh environments.
- Sustainability: Both Eucalyptus and pine are fast-growing tree species, and the poles and timber can be harvested sustainably, making them environmentally friendly choices. Additionally, both types of plantations can provide habitat for native wildlife and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- Cost-effectiveness: Eucalyptus poles and pine timber are relatively inexpensive compared to other types of construction materials, making them affordable options for a wide range of projects.
- Versatility: Eucalyptus poles and pine timber can be used for a variety of construction applications, including building foundations, fences, decks, and pergolas. They can also be cut to various lengths and sizes to meet specific project requirements.
- Availability: Eucalyptus and pine are widely cultivated and readily available, making them easily accessible for construction projects.
- Aesthetics: Eucalyptus poles have a unique natural texture and color, while pine timber can be stained or painted to match a variety of design styles, adding aesthetic value to any project.
Applications for Eucalyptus and Pine poles in coastal wood construction.
At Sabie Poles, we supply Eucalyptus building and fencing Poles, droppers, and laths. We also supply Pine Structural Timber, and Timber Mouldings. These CCA-treated wood products can be used on the coast as follows:
CCA Poles
As mentioned above, Eucalyptus poles are known for their remarkable inherent strength. This natural strength makes them particularly suitable for use as posts, beams, and piles in construction projects.
When used as posts, eucalyptus poles can support heavy loads and withstand significant amounts of stress and strain without breaking or buckling.
Similarly, when used as beams, they can span large distances and provide excellent support for roofing and flooring systems.
Additionally, eucalyptus poles can be used as piles in foundation work. They provide a strong and stable support structure for buildings and other structures.
CCA laths and Droppers
Laths can be used as a support structure for roofing tiles, or as a backing for masonry. They can also be used for decorative purposes.
Droppers, on the other hand, are small-diameter poles that are typically used for fence construction. They are driven into the ground to provide support for the fence wire.
S5 Structural Timber
Structural timber can be used for framing buildings, including walls, floors, and roofs. It can also be used for beams and columns in buildings. Structural timber is most often used as roof trusses for inland and coastal structures.
Timber Mouldings
Timber mouldings include; decking, ceiling, flooring, cladding, architrave, and quarter-rounds. they are used in construction to enhance the appearance of a building.
In addition to their decorative function, timber mouldings can also be used to conceal gaps and transitions between different building materials. They can be used to add architectural detail to a building and create a sense of depth and dimensionality.
